Shirt tucked in or out?

Shirt tucked in or out?

The Mirror Hesitation 🤔

You're standing in front of the mirror in the morning. You have your new shirt on. You tuck it into your trousers... and it feels a bit stiff. You pull it out... and it looks a bit sloppy. What is the rule? Many men get this wrong. They wear a formal shirt loose (which looks like a nightgown) or try to keep a too-short polo tucked in (which pops out with every movement).

Here are the 3 rules to never doubt again.

1. The "Hemline" Rule

Look at the bottom (the hem) of the shirt.

  • Straight hem: This is made to be worn over the trousers (often with casual summer shirts).

  • Curved hem (with tails at the side): This is designed to be worn inside the trousers. The curve ensures the shirt stays tucked when you sit down. Vercate Shirts feature this classic curve, keeping them perfectly in place during office hours.

2. The Occasion Rule

  • Are you wearing a blazer or suit? ALWAYS IN. No discussion. A shirt peeking out from under a jacket is an absolute style error.

  • Are you wearing Chinos or Jeans? Here, both are allowed.

    • IN: For a "Smart Casual" look (professional, polished).

    • OUT: For a "Casual" look (weekend, drinks). Note: the shirt should not be longer than halfway down your trouser zipper.

3. The "Muffin Top" Problem

Why do men like to wear their shirts untucked? Because they fear the 'Muffin Top': the ballooning of fabric around the waist when you tuck a shirt in. This isn't your fault, it's the fit. Cheap 'Regular Fit' shirts have too much fabric. The Vercate Slim Fit is cut to contour your body. When you tuck it in, it stays tight and smooth, without those annoying bunches above your belt.

Conclusion: Choose Length

The biggest annoyance is a shirt creeping out of your trousers when you reach for something. Our shirts and Long Sleeve Polos have the ideal torso length: long enough to stay put, short enough to wear casually loose.

Stop readjusting. Choose the perfect length.
